North America occupies the northern portion of the landmass generally referred to as the New World, the Western Hemisphere, the Americas, or simply America (which is sometimes considered a single continentand North America a subcontinent). North America's only land connection to South America is at the Isthmus of Panama. North America is often divided into subregions but no universally accepted divisions exist. South America

South America and Carribean Islands

South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth’s surface. South America’s ski and snowboard season begins in June and runs until October, but the best months for skiing and shredding have always been July and August, when the slopes are powdery and the scenery spectacular.

The Andes are the world’s largest continental mountain range, so views from the top include everything from ancient volcanoes to the lush forests of the Amazon. No matter where you are along the range, things are going to look a little bit different than the slopes you’re used to if you’re in the States.

The islands of Aruba, Barbados, Trinidad, and Tobago sit on the northerly South American continental shelf. The Netherlands Antilles and the federal dependencies of Venezuela lie along the northerly South American shelf. South America is home to the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls in Venezuela; the largest river (by volume), the Amazon River; the longest mountain range, the Andes (whose highest mountain is Aconcagua at 6,962 m), the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert, the largest rainforest, the Amazon Rainforest; the highest capital city, La Paz, Bolivia; the highest commercially navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca; and, excluding research stations in Antarctica, the world’s southernmost permanently inhabited community, Puerto Toro, Chile.South America’s major mineral resources are gold, silver, copper, iron ore, tin, and petroleum.Tourism has increasingly become a significant source of income for many South American countries. Historical relics, architectural and natural wonders, a diverse range of foods and culture, vibrant and colorful cities, and stunning landscapes attract millions of tourists every year to South America.

Some of the most visited places in the region are Machu Picchu, the Amazon Rainforest, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Fortaleza, Maceió, Bogota, Florianópolis, Isla Margarita, Natal, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Angel Falls, Cuzco, Lake Titicaca, Patagonia, Cartagena and the Galápagos islands.

Argentina

In Argentina, you’ll find the most popular ski spots along Patagonia and the Lake Region, where resorts in Bariloche offer affordable lodgings and amenities near gorgeous slopes. Cerro Catedral, named for the resemblance of its summits to the towers of a medieval temple, is a long-time favorite of locals and visitors alike. The southern regions have warm summers and cold winters with heavy snowfall, especially in mountainous zones.

Many species live in the subtropical north.Prominent animals include big cats like the jaguar, puma, and ocelot; primates (howler monkey); large reptiles (crocodiles), \the Argentine Black and White Tegu and a species of caiman. Other animals include the tapir, peccary, capybara, bush dog, raccoon, and various species of turtle and tortoise. There are a wide variety of birds, notably hummingbirds, flamingos, toucans, and swallows.Argentina has a market-oriented economy with abundant natural resources, a well-educated population, an export-oriented agricultural sector and a relatively diversified industrial base.

Brazil

Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest country in South America. It is the world’s fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population with over 190 million people. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the largest lusophone country in the world. Brazil is a country of great natural beauty, and is home to a people of great ethnic and cultural diversity whose heritage is expressed in vibrant art, historical cities, and bustling urban centers. Here’s why you should see it all for yourself.

São Paulo, being Brazil’s center of commerce, a huge sprawling metropolis and the largest city in South America, probably isn’t on your list of vacation hot-spots, but when the day’s work is done, the visitors and residents of this city of trade and industry like to play as hard as they work.

South of the Amazon region, the country’s interior is dominated by the Brazilian Shield, an expansive bedrock flat that is slowly falling victim to the elements.  The Mato Grosso, a smooth, grassy plain in Brazil’s center, slowly gives way to the Planalto, a low-rise plateau that extends across the central and western regions.
